One of the more well-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals, and organizations in need. And volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills.

Volunteering helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person. Working with pets and other animals has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety.

The field ain't gonna be a simple run and gun. Even if you are lucky on your supplies, your team could still affect your survival chances if they make mistakes. It will also depend on their perk. If they don't use it correctly, or don't put it to good use for the team, it will cause some trouble. This part of the guide will explain how to work with your team and your perks correctly. Only very, very basic information on the perk's job will be explained. Perks will have a lot more information.

A good field guide is one of the most important tools to help identify birds. Traditionally, field guides took the form of books, often quite big books, that for field use could be heavy or vulnerable to wetting on rainy days. Nowadays there are also some great smartphone apps as well, making bird ID fit into the palm of your hand. Many people rely on both books and apps to identify birds; below are some of our favorite guides for North America.

Look for a field guide with drawings rather than photographs. Artists portray birds in similar poses, using their experience and knowledge to make it easier for you to key in on the important field marks. With photographs, lighting conditions and differences in postures can obscure important features or highlight unimportant ones.

Wonderful write up on field guides. One of my collections as well. I lost my Zim Golden Guide for Birds. I loved the illustrations and especially it was the only one at the time that fit into my back pocket. then along came the hot National Geographic bird guide in the 80s and my Golden got lost. it seems to be out of print now. My loss. Thanks for your write-up.

This was such a soothing article. My 5 year old son has been enthralled with his Birds of Central Florida and Saltwater Fish of FL field guides. His joy takes me back to 1993, I was 10, when a family friend bought me a shell field guide, while on a beach vacation in Montawk, NY. I collected shells, researched what they were, and put them back. There was no other place that I wanted to be. Sweet memories.

It will typically include a description of the objects covered, together with paintings or photographs and an index. More serious and scientific field identification books, including those intended for students, will probably include identification keys to assist with identification, but the publicly accessible field guide is more often a browsable picture guide organized by family, colour, shape, location or other descriptors.

Today, each field guide has its own range, focus and organization. Specialist publishers such as Croom Helm, along with organisations like the Audubon Society, the RSPB, the Field Studies Council, National Geographic, HarperCollins, and many others all produce quality field guides.
